We realise a trend in our Open Mic nights, that our students are no longer singing the Mandopop and English top 40s. The main reason being KPOP is the way to go now! So we thought, where not we just make it officially a “K-POP NIGHT”?!

Today, we shall be sharing with you the UKULELE. I am sure many of you know about this small yet fascinating instrument that resembles the guitar. The Ukulele was introduced to the people of Hawaii in the late 1800s. Recently, thanks to Youtube, people are getting to know more about Ukulele and it has been in the spotlight since. In fact, there are many popular songs, such as I'm Yours by Jason Mraz, Hey Sould Sister by Train, which can be played using the Ukulele.

Here are updates on ECHO MUSIC SCHOOL!

A group of Multi Media Students from Singapore Polytechnic came down on Saturday to ECHO MUSIC SCHOOL to film an Official Informative Video. What is it for?? it's a secret which will be revealed soon! so stay tuned!

Although the process was tedious, everyone definitely had an awesome time filming and it was a great experience for them!

It is May the 15th!
It is Echo Music's Director......Simon's birthday!

Simon has been working hard throughout the years in Echo Music; running the music school in the best way he can, and provided us a place,where we can call our second home. By doing what he loves, and doing it with passion, Echo Music has develop into what it is today; a place built on bonds, friendship and the love of music. It is his birthday, some of us decided to have a mini celebration for him to show our appreciation for this man.

Those present: Taiwei, Neo, Mark, Jake, Yan, Siling and myself!

About 8pm, the man arrives in the school. Simon saw the table of food, and have a rough idea that we are going to celebrate this special day with him. He is of course more than happy to help himself with the food, and everyone started eating, relaxing to the background music, and chatting happily like we always did.

Simon was so happy that he decide to share his Moet and Chandon champagne with us! He had a good time opening the champagne though. :)

The beautiful ones!

It is cake cutting time! We bought an ice-cream cake for Simon, as it is his favourite cake. He was pleasantly surprised. However it wasn't the easiest cake to cut. The cake was so hard that we tried everything we could; change into a bigger kitchen knife, warm up the knife with fire (as shown in the picture above), which did not work out really well. We waited for cake to defrost for 5min, and finally all of us got enjoy the delicious cookies and cream ice-cream cake ........with joy!

The night will not be complete without some jamming from the music-lovers! All of us jam spontaneously throughout the night. It was indeed a night of fun, warmth and love.

We wish Simon a most happy birthday, that all the good things will shower abundantly on him, he will be able to prosper in every way, and bring the school to new heights in the not too distant future. GO SIMON!! GO ECHO MUSIC!!!

Singapore Technologies Engineering Idol 2011!

This is the third time that I had been invited to judge for ST Engineering Singing Competition. As usual, it is a great pleasure.

Many would thought that a singing competition held within a company will not be of high standard, but it is not the same case with ST Engineering. There are always many great singers taking part in this competition; especially this year where there are more new bloods, which brings the competition to a whole new level.

There are 16 finalists. They sing a mixture of Mandarin, English and Hokkien songs.

I love to judge for singing competitions, as the contestants always inspire me when they perform their song; the way they move their body, their planning of image and costumes, the looks on their faces; the passion they display is indeed very endearing.

I am happy too! =)

It was an enjoyable session, actually I was really perked up, feeling all excited after, and cannot wait to go back to school and teach my students!

I look forward to seeing all the competitors again, in the light that they will learn whatever this competition has taught them, and excel in their performance and singing techniques.

Jam For Japan Charity Gig @ Echoloft

Echomusic has always been actively involved in major events and performances held by schools and non profit organizations. Recently, we decided to do our part for the people of Japan by holding our very own Jam for Japan Charity Gig.

Held at the Echoloft Café on the 30^th of April 2011, tickets were priced at just $5 for which all the proceeds were donated to the Red Cross. Now, even though the event was a small scale one and not widely publicized, Echomusic still managed to raise $500 from the ticket sales and donations. Nonetheless, it was a night of non-stop music and fun as the bands involved performed songs in different genres and languages. Of course, this would not have been possible without the audience’s generous support. Hence, I would first like to say a big thank you to everyone who came down to support the event!

To me, this event had proved to be both a challenging and meaningful one as I was handling the role of both organizer and performer at the same time. However, I was really impressed with how willing local musicians were in lending out a hand and doing their part for charity. Hence, I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards Zen’Shin, Hyyaka Ryouran, Balloon Wingz, Epicka, Grover, Zerodia as well as my fellow members from Renaissance for showing your support by performing at the event. You guys really rocked the stage that night!

Special thanks also go to Pearson and Dane, who went the extra mile and brought down additional equipment from home, as well painstakingly tuning the drum set so that the crowd could experience better sound. Of course, not forgetting the event photographers Anjelina, Ze Feng and Sochii, who took such nice pictures and videos of the event. Last but not least, a big thank you to Echomusic which made everything possible in the first place by sponsoring the location as well as the equipment for the event!

All in all....

Practise Session for Student Gathering Mar 2010!

We have Anqi, Jiewen,Zellyn and Jake in the video. Grace could not be here due to her exams. I hope she is going to do well! Alright, back to the video, they are doing the song 喜欢你by Kit Chan.

It is not a very tough song to sing, but this time around it's a huge challenge for them, as all of them are going to harmonise and sing parts. It is not easy, I know it because I had problems harmonising years ago. But I know it can be achieved through some hard work and discipline. This time around, I really do hope they can step up to the job, and have a good performance.

The 5 of them came from 3 different classes. It is through events like a student gathering, that students from different department get to mindle with each other.

It always makes my day seeing students, practising hard for a performance. I really hope they will bring this spirit throughout their music journey.

Seeing such passion in the students eyes, the blushes, the smiles, the natural vibrato that comes with nervousness, we knew they did their best. Each were winners in their own rights. No one did badly. All did what they came to do - perform their hearts out.

Hey, I know this concert is over for a while. But it is sure a memorable one, and will be remembered for a long time for those instructors and Star 2 students, who had the honour of participating with him at the esplanade.

Yes! The launching of their 3rd album.

This album '三人套餐" is one of their most 'musically daring' album to date. The three guys challenge the Chinese music industry with some non-mainstream' melodies and sounds. Thanks to their management company, the 3 of them have got really cool looking hair for their image. Nic..you look so much fairer with red hair.

Alex Wang returns after four years with a brand new album “No Explanation”. Featuring 12 original tracks, written, composed, arranged and produced by Alex himself, “No Explanation” delivers his unique music style and perspective on life.

From the moving “Broken Heart” and “Alone In The Garden” to angry numbers “Mistake” and the title track “No Explanation”, Alex’s musical storytelling style paints a poignant picture of his life.

Alex’s journey in music began when he was fifteen years old. He started off playing
the guitar and quickly moved into digital music production

The focus of his music has seen many changes over the years. Starting off with simple pop songs, Alex is now emphasising lyrical content and a strong music style. His music ranges from slow ballads to fast dance music. He continues to experiment with different styles, finding just the right expression for his music.

Alex is also a seasoned performer, having performed at the Substation, Library @ Esplanade, Library @ Orchard, Dome @ Kent Ridge, University Cultural Centre, the Esplanade Recital Studio and Victoria. He has excellent stage presence and is able to quickly build a strong rapport with his audience.

Alex will once again thrill audiences as he returns to the Esplanade Recital Studio for a two-night concert in January 2010, where he will sing songs from his three albums as well as hits from his musical “Believe”.

He also plans to publish the novelised version of “Believe” as well as release the musical’s original soundtrack when “Believe” returns to stage in July 2010.

Leon and Friends - Debut Showcase!

Leon Lim, 林昱志, is a familiar face in the music industry with his debut stint in Channel U's Project Superstar in 2005.

He was one of the top 12 finalists and ever since then, he has acted in a couple of Channel 8 dramas, and lent his vocals for the Star Seach 2007 Theme Song and Musical. In 2008, he was also roped in for Channel U's SPOP, a nationwide song-writing competition, to sing one of the finalist’s composition"男人香水". Always keen to improve and learn, Leon is also currently performing for events and has also written a theme song for an upcoming local movie.

Throughout his music career, Leon’s enthusiasm has endeared him to many friends who share the same passion as he does in singing and composing.

It's a pleasure to be able to perform for charity and a great experience to the performer as well. Some performed before last year for the same performance, some were first timer. I believe they all enjoyed themselves! The NTU peeps also provided some mini games to attract people to donate too! Nonetheless , everyone is trying their best to help. Keep up the good work guys!

Our instructors Caleb and Fong were performing in C-Nai Cafe for their regular Thursday gig, they had a surprise guest sitting in the midst of the audience.

This girl is Joey Leong; a rising popular star in Malaysia. At the age of 14, this girl already has numerous works under her belt. These include dramas, albums and advertisment including Tourism Malaysia.

Her movie ' Blood Ties 还魂' is now showing in all cinemas islandwide. You may want to give this movie a try if you ain't the faint hearted. Support Local Productions. =)

I still fondly remember the first time I watched the auditions of the First Season of Superband. There is this group of 3 guys. The lead singer is especially eye-catching because of his big smile and cute moves on the stage. When asked why is their group name 迷路兵, their answer was.... " 因为我们喜欢喝MILO-BING!!", how cute can that be?! =D

Sometimes when you watch a competition, you will know the ending even before it happened; it feels like watching Carrie Underwood auditioning for American Idol; somehow I know that she will be the Champion. For a band as fresh as 迷路兵, I am sure many will agree with me that half the season through, we already know that this band is meant to win this thing...and they did. =)

After winning the Best Newcomer Award in 新加坡金曲奖 2007, this year 2009 they are nominated again, for 最佳乐团奖, 最受欢迎团体奖 and 最佳本地歌手奖. Well Done guys!! Support them...with actions! Start voting for them here.

Eason Chan from Hongkong saw 迷路兵 performed he said this... “他们很像学生，很投入去唱自己的歌。我今天真是大开眼界，原来新加坡有这么优秀的歌手。" It's a huge compliment from the most respectable singer in the music scene.

For almost seventeen years now, the World Mental Health Day is a campaign observed globally focusing on mental health and mental disorders.

This Saturday, 12 September 2009, Singapore joins in with a full day event with an exhibition and musical performances, @ Plaza Singapura Sheltered Drome.

Milubing (with our very own Nic!) will be performing 9pm for this very special event.

Right after the performance on Saturday night for the 'Butterfly Dreams', we have the Renci Charity Food Festival Performance on Sunday! Oh my...and what a hot day it is! We keep singing, sweating and vice-versa. Thank you Renci Hospital for inviting us once again!

I had always enjoyed performing for the Food Fesita since years ago. The audience are always so responsive and generous with their donations. The students recieve little gifts and drinks from the audience who appreciate their performances. These little gestures from the audience always drives us working harder and better. I would say most students' stage presence and confidence has improved after much exposure. I would hope they will continue to strive for excellence.

Upcoming will be our 2nd outlet at Chinatown Official Opening and the Red Cross Charity Event happening on the same day! Go Go Go!

This month is extremely packed for us. The 'Butterfly Dreams' musical had just ended with a huge success. It is full house for the 2 shows! I am sure it is a very enriching experience for all of us involved; all the rehearsals, the late nights, practices and working with professionals.

I do hope the students will find everything worthwhile despite the stressful moments. This is afterall the entertainment industry, people come with expectations, and we all have to step up our game. But I thought all of them pull it off very well...we are so proud!

about the band...
Formed in 2006, we’re an acoustic band consisting of 2 guys and a girl. 3’s never a crowd for us because we have fun, enjoy the spontaneity of impromptus as we jazz up old classics, turn up the heat with the occasional rock song, and melt your hearts with romantic ballads.

about the members...
Jason Wong
Jason keeps the groove with the cajon (percussion). He can sing and play the guitar too (lead or rhythm). He’ll mesmerize you with his strong interpretation of classic and Cantonese pop songs.

Ong Yutong
Our very own vocalist. When she sings, there is the sexiness (jazz and soul), the edge (rock), the heart melting (ballads). The versatility of not only style, but languages- English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, and even Malay! She’s also keeping up the beat with the shaker.

Wong Longhui
Our very own funky guitarist. Has a knack for improvising and rearrangement of songs, he’ll vamp it up with his various styles of playing - fingerstyle, bossanova, rock and folks. He’ll even charm your pants off with his voice.

This trio has since performed in numerous festivals, corporate events and even on live radio! So come catch them for yourself

This June, MONsters is in the house.

Established in 2004, MONsters comprises of Keyboardist/Vocalist – Ah Du, Guitarist/Vocalist – Jianhua and the two female vocalists – Ximei and Meilian. The band started out as regular performers at music cafes and they have also performed at outdoor events as well as wedding gigs.

"All these years, Roy & Jamie have been singing in Min Ge Can Ting (Cafe with live performance). Having the passion & support we have in music, we have decided to produce our album, DoubleVoices. Producing DoubleVoices is not as easy as we thought it would be without any background & experience in song writing and music production. We would sincerely like to thank our friends for their tremendous help/support and valuable advice along the way. We do hope that there will be another album after DoubleVoices and we believes that we are not alone. DoubleVoices, as long as there is music, our passion never dies."

The New Faces!

Yeaps, our 2nd batch of S.T.A.R students are all getting a taste of how it is like to be performing in a real stage. Maybe not quite as they imagine, everything seem to happen to quick and too fast! I am sure as time goes by, they will begin to love the stage, like what the first batch of students did.

Let us meet them!

Wing Kee. One will be attracted to the comfortable quality in her vocals; a young performer who seeks to perfect the art of singing.

Zhiyuan! The boy with the mellow vocals and his sincere rendition of songs is very heart-felt.

Shaotian! No he is not Pin Guan, but he can like also belt out the ballads numbers with great convictions and sentiments.

Audrey is born with natural stage presence and unique tone quality. Love the stage girl, cause the stage really loves you!

Desmond. One of the most versatile singer in this batch, a great vocalist who is a rocker at heart. Rock On Boy!

Jacyl. She is a multi talented girl with a demure personality and a gorgeous voice, who also possesses a strong zeal for the art

Kailun who has a sweet persona and great attitude, will strike you with her clean and powerful vocals.

Tiffany. One of the most comtemporary voices of the batch. A girl who is still unaware of her great talents. Watch her glimmer on stage in the near future.

Xinyi. It is hard not to fall for Xinyi's ever-soothing vocals. She will charmed you with her quiet rendition of songs that will leave you wanting more.

The second batch of students are already performing in the White Tangerine Cafe and The Fireplace, with the first batch of seniors guiding them. We hope to see your faces there, lending your supports to these new kids on the block.

The school will always have our usual performance on Saturdays at Global Sounds Cafe. This time around, it is slightly different. Our performers Denis, Neo and Fong had to perform the same song over and over for like.......7 times!

Yeaps! That night is special as the crew from Mediacorp Channel 8 is here for some shooting. Neo even brought his beautiful retro microphone along for his beautiful voice, and he certainly loves the attention. Fong is as usual, impressive in her deliverance of the song. Well Done GUYS!

This new variety show is going to commence somewhere in May. How exciting.

Musicdreamer is a local music cafe that is located in Marina Square. It is a place where I started my first public singing performance at the age of 19. It is a place where many good singers perform every night, singing song dedications given by the audience.

We are so fortunate to have the whole cafe to ourselves, for our own vocal students to have a taste of what it is like to sing on such a pretigious stage. Some of our students patronise the cafe often, and it is indeed a special moment for them to share the same stage with the singers they admire.

Neo and Yan step up as the hosts of the night, and they did a brilliant job. We also have the 2 bosses Simon and Denis on the keyboard for the students.

I am sure singing on the stage is very much different from the usual lesson enviroment in the classroom. The nerves get into you, even the air smells different! However, the courage to step onto the stage is very commendable. Every performance should serve as an experience for a better one in the future, and making every single note count is important.

I do think all of them enjoy the night alot....in different ways.

The school is looking forward to organize more of such events for our students. We are working hard and happily into it. We hope all the students can have a more than a 'nice' environment to walk their journey of music.

我想我不仅仅是...失去你

Its very upsetting to see another good singer passing on, especially someone as young as she is.

Ah Sang passed away at the age of 34, due to breast cancer. But her music will be remembered for a long time.

Ah Sang is best known for her song 《叶子》, her beautiful voice and emotional rendition of songs made her one of the most beloved ballad singer. She had two albums 《寂寞在唱歌》 and 《受了点伤》 in her lifetime.

How fragile life is...her friends revealed that Ah Sang knowing her own medical condition, did not give up in pursuing her love for the art. She is an inspiration for people like us.

So guys, live your dreams! Do it for yourself, and for those who can't...

Renci Charity Performance@ Orchid Country Club

It was a successful event that night with about 1 million raised. The guest of honour is Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

I had been involved in Renci Charity since......6 years back? It is always a pleasure to be involved in charity performances, and be able to use our gift of music to help the needy. This year is especially heart felt as the performers and I get to visit the hospital and patients, looking at the patients who got rejected by other hospitals and some who may never recovered, it pains my heart. This really inspire us to make the event a great one, not for us, but for the patients.

This time around, the event is not held in Channel U with artiste risking their life doing stunts, instead it was a charity dinner with over one thousand people, enjoying the sumptuous dinner and us singing happily on stage. It's time... For an Echo Music Student Gathering again! =)

We will be bringing you a series of performances by Echo's very own students and instructors, as they churn out hits from the 1990s and 2000s. There will also be evergreen hits, and even dialect songs performances!

Certificates will also be given out to students who have completed the various levels of the courses they are learning in.

We would like to invite all students to join the Echo family as we partake in a night of adventure into the music timeline and award-giving for students who have successfully moved on to the next level of learning!

Please kindly R.S.V.P and make the payment of $7 per pax by 12 April 2009 as we will be catering a dinner buffet and will need to know how many people to expect. We also welcome friends and family who would like to come, just simply let us know in advance will do.
